A growing number of climate experts are sounding the alarm over what could become the most extreme El Niño event in modern history. Early projections suggest that the Pacific Ocean may warm to levels surpassing anything recorded in the past 150 years — a scenario some researchers are already calling a “Godzilla El Niño.”

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports a high likelihood that the developing El Niño will intensify and persist well into spring 2027. If the projections hold, the impacts could be severe across multiple continents:

  • China — Increased likelihood of torrential rainfall and flash flooding.
  • Pacific Coast of South America — Greater probability of widespread flooding.

Europe: Indirect Effects, but Still Significant

Europe is not directly governed by El Niño patterns, yet the additional heat in the global climate system can amplify regional extremes:

  • Increased likelihood of weather instability
  • Possible episodes of unusually cold winter spells in Central Europe

These indirect effects could strain public health systems, agriculture, and energy networks across the continent.

Beyond the environmental consequences, researchers expect substantial economic damage. Potential impacts include:
